Steed Malbranque

Steed Malbranque

I wrote the below post earlier today, when the news was that Steed Malbranque had a family problem leading him to quit football. It seems Steed has since come out and denied all claims relating to his family via a representative. It is not clear if Steed has indeed retired or if he is to remain at St Étienne, however, the indications are that the news was falsified and spread. The press association was provided with a statement the details of which can be found here.

On a personal note, I am disgusted by the behaviour of the individual who started the rumours if this is the case and while we have nothing definitive at this stage I apologise if my post today has confused or upset anybody. The national newspapers which run this story and who were the source of my information have since removed and/or retracted their stories.

I am sure by now everyone has heard Steed Malbranque’s news. If you haven’t heard, Steed, having moved from Sunderland to Saint-Étienne this summer has been forced to retire from football in order to care for his 4 year-old son, who has been diagnosed with cancer. Steed is 31.

I am sure I don’t really need to tell you anything about the man, given that it’s not been long since he left, but in case you don’t know:

Steed moved to Tottenham from Fulham in 2006 and stayed for 2 years, making 62 first team appearances and scoring 6 goals before moving to Sunderland. Steed was a fan’s favourite in his time at White Hart Lane, thanks to his style and tenacity. Steed won his only trophy in English football with Spurs, the 2008 League Cup.

I hope you will join me in wishing Steed, his family and in particular his son all the best, along with our thoughts and prayers during what will be a tough time. Get well soon Malbranque Jr.
